Real-time claims processing architectures reduce claim adjudication latency, improve provider cash flows, and align operational efficiency with the expectations of patients, providers, and payers. Industry actors have commenced migrating claims processing capabilities from batch to real-time modes under pressure from operational performance lags, regulatory imperatives, and competitive threats. This paper defines decision-making frameworks and metrics for evaluating real-time claims processing architectures in enterprise-scale health insurance organizations. Key operational metrics include latency, throughput, and error rates; clinical outcomes encompass adjudication accuracy, denial rates, and cash-flow impact. Additional foci are return on investment, total cost of ownership, and proposed migration sequencing.
Processing delay affects not only provider interactions but also downstream operations. Third-party administrators and other claims-billing companies often experience operational latency and inefficiency, with claims remaining in a pending state for extended periods. Denials associated with insufficient investigation or incorrect routing to the appropriate payer also jeopardize provider cash flow and patient care. Migration of claims processing capabilities from batch to real-time modes therefore promises to remove friction from the provider-payer relationship—a sentiment shared by stakeholders across the healthcare ecosystem. Patients, providers, and payers now demand efficiency of transactions, just as these stakeholders have come to expect the instantaneous shipping and returns fostered by Amazon.
